This book is set in the time right after World War II. Its May 12, 1949 people are starving dying. Germany was split in to two west Germany went to Russia and south Germany went to the allies which includes the United States, France, and Great Britain. The Allies wanted a piece of the capitol of Germany(Berlin) though so Russia split it up the same way as Germany. Russia got the west and the allies split the north side of Berlin. Later Russia wanted to have all of Berlin but Russia didn't want to brake the treaty . They devised a plan to block the city so no trucks or ships could get through to west Berlin. The people of west Berlin where starving even more there was no more food or water getting to Berlin.
Russia offered the people of West Berlin to leave the allies and let the Russians take care of them. They refused the offer because they valued freedom more than food. The allies found a way to get to Berlin. They started to send cargo planes wit hall the necessary items. There was one man named Gail S. Halvorsen he wanted to go sight seeing around Berlin but he would be able to go when he flew the cargo plane. He needed to go at a different time so he planned his tour but when he got there he was early for the tour and had to wait. During his wait he saw some shildren by the fence and watching the planes land. He was about to leave and then he felt two sticks of gum in his pocket and gave them the gum and told them to share. Nobody fought for the gum the people that stuck there hand out first ate it ,but they pasted the wrapper around for everyone to smell. Those sticks of gum inspired him. Little did he know that idea would change Berlin.
He told the children in German to watch the sky because when he came on his plane he wood drop something. The asked him how would they now which was him. "I will wiggle my wings when I come by" he said in German. When he passed by on his plane he dropped a parachute with a chocolate bar at the end. The children were so happy and Mr. Halverson became the chocolate pilot. Every time he passed berlin he would drop more and more candies. He will live in Berlins heart forever.
